Perfectly symmetrical oil paintings, broken by their color. These paintings tend to have a center focused motif with bold value transitions. Each of these paintings has an emotional core that the title gives clue to.
Turning Motif
During the end of 2019 a new motif emerged in the Broken Symmetry series of the ‘turn’. I’d choose my highlight and then begin to turn the color around the shape in carefully colored cells. The below oil paintings are examples of this using the full canvas.
Solar Power Duo
I made “Winter Sun” as an ode to the thin light of winter and the beautiful brightness that shines off snow drifts. “Sunglasses On, Baby” is it’s seasonal opposite: blistering hot days and the flowering warmth in your bones. This duo was a challenge to take the symbolism of the sun and specifically design how it presents in opposite seasons.
Center Circle Motif
There was a long period of time where I was captivated by the center circle motif in the broken gradient series. There is something weighty and satisfying in putting a light circle at the center of sharp dynamic movements.
To The Moon And Back
In 2019 I was commissioned by a couple in Seattle to make a set of paintings with perfect symmetry and the same colors, but unique from each other. The paintings mirror each other in small moments over and over again creating a romantic back and forth between them. The title comes from a sweet saying I heard them say during the consult “I love you to the moon and back!”
