From Engineer to Artist with Ashwini Sadekar

"Keep Your Sunny Side Up" Oil on Canvas, 18x24

Ashwini Sadekar’s Artist Statement

“My paintings are based on a detailed scientific investigation of how neighboring colors influence light perception. Through direct observation under the sun and the use of color, I express the geometry of nature. As a colorist, I examine flowers, fruits, faces, and forests from the perspective of the entire visible spectrum. My inquiry is how to use oil-bound colors to recreate the phenomenon of natural light on canvas.

I start each painting by looking at the color relationships that produce the illusion of light. My artwork is practically abstract at this point, with a pattern of huge color forms. Similarly, I constantly scan and compare each color note in my composition to the others. The lightness, darkness, intensity, neutrality, warmth, and coolness of a hue in comparison to the others are the parameters I use as guidelines. As if I were sculpting the facets on a diamond with paint, I continue to develop these color shapes into additional subdivisions and variants. The ultimate result is a color veil that is seamless and has a uniform surface quality.

The fundamental emotion that drives my work is pure delight and contentment of color dancing across the surface, while these technical qualities help to develop the painting. My paintings are a vibrant dance between Impressionism and classical realism, combining a conscientious dedication to the atelier tradition with a modern aesthetic that depicts nature's geometry.

My work is a method for me to appreciate and enjoy my life's experiences, as well as to find inspiration in nature in all of its forms. Each painting in my chroma world takes the viewer on a reflective, contemplative journey of new color connections. My paintings are a prismatic dimension that invites the viewer into an intriguing and engaging experience. They're a means for me, the artist, to send energy and enthusiasm out into the world through my painted image.”
